And here it is

my ever more infrequent Blogging.

Been hanging out in Texas for about 7 weeks.

Good food.

Good people.

Art/Craft

Humidity.

Bugs.

and of course............Opera.

Opera.

It stuns me, at least makes me pause to realize that I still love this field. I was confronted by a roommate one morning as I was in our kitchen rummaging for a glass of soy milk and some cheez-its after work at 3am. He asked me, "how are you not going insane right now?" Without even thinking, and through a soy milk mustache I replied, because I am in love with what I do. And suddenly, I came to the realization that I have made a career out of that precious time that people spend in this expansive, opulent room, sitting next to other and equally expansive and opulent people, all watching expansive and opulent worlds and performances for 2-6 hours. A few hours that to so many watching, is precious and treasured. That time was given for an anniversary, a birthday, a date. It was purchased by a donor for thousands in the pursuit of a heightened philanthropy. Bought by a student for $10 who looks a little bit out of place, a little bit under-dressed, and a little more awed by the whole thing. The energy of an opera house, any theater really, is intangible, inescapable, and addicting.

I understand what it means to have been "once bitten" by theater. The concept so idly tossed about by professors and students alike while in the confines and safety netting of the modern day "art school", but which has become an often painful reminder that I have chosen a course which to deviate from would mean a lifetime of anti-depressants, therapy, and a never-ending stream of the could have/would have one liners at all family functions.

But to cut through all the quasi-intellectualism.....

I like what I do. And I don't think I want to do anything else.

So I suck

At this whole blogging thing apparently.

I got back from Prague, after many adventures, lot's of food, lot's of drink, lot's of friends, and I unexpected trip to Houston. By the way, Delta sucks. In case there was a doubt.

I have about 1 month left in Santa Fe, doing what I do.

And then.....sigh.....I am moving to Houston Texas.

Yes, Texas.

I have been offered a contract at Houston Grand Opera to be there Lighting Associate.

Great company, great people, great Designers.......9 months in Houston.

And then maybe back to Santa Fe next May?

On the up side, I will get a chance to come back out to LA in early September for about a week, so that means lots of good times in a very short period, rock.

I also get a month off at some point in Nov - Dec. for thanksgiving. So more fun there.

All in all things are shaping up to be the crazy that I call Normal, and I'm all right with that.

To my Friends and Family who read this thing, know that I love you all, and can't wait to see you again.

Prague

So I leave for Prague tomorrow in the A.M.

Should be a great time with great friends.

I'm sure there will be a lot more info and pics when I get back.

I'll be back on the 20th, I'm not sure if my phone is going to work or not. Somehow, I doubt it. But who knows.

I have bag packed. Willing and will travel.

I pray this travel, although short, will shake me as hard as it can.

here's to the adventure.

Day 10: Albuquerque, NM - Santa Fe, NM

Woke early...

Still on sun time.

Packed up and parted ways again with a friend.

Made it up to Santa Fe late morning.

Went up to the Opera to try to connect, get house keys, and figure myself out.

No luck.

Walked around the house and backstage a while, reminding myself why I'm here.

Went to yet another cafe.

Got a call from my roommate. Met up, more coffee, plans for the evening.

Finally got keys, and an address.

Great house.

A neon ceiling fan and hardwood floors.

Grocery shopping, and dinner at Maria's...amazing

Got a visit at the house from the rest of the lighting staff.

Laughs, reconnections, and spirits lifted.

I remember why I'm doing all this.

sleep....

And that was my trip.

Day 9: Gila, NM - Albuquerque, NM

Woke to the sounds of more cooking.

Full breakfast and more coffee at dawn.

Got loaded up with gifts and some Gila water.

We part ways for another while.

Mountains yield yet again to sand and sun.

Made it back to ABQ in time for some afternoon derby.

The Team that won was great. Very smart playing.

Pizza and beer after party.

Back to Erica's apartment by myself and a few listens to my cousin's album.

So much cat hair

sleep....

Day 8: Gila, NM

Woke to the sun.

It had been a while.

The owner of the straw bale house came home. Greetings. Pleasantries.
Lesley cooks amazing blue corn pancakes and stove top espresso.

Breakfast by the creek.

Got to see her dwelling in the daylight.

A simple hut under a simple tree.

Big smiles.

Navigated my fully loaded Honda Civic back out of the creek.

Stopped in the house that we were to be house sitting that night.

Running water, lights, beautiful.

Met a Native American couple who have become the local parents for my cousin.

Yet more great people. Sincere and without an agenda.

Gathered food for dinner.

Just me and my cousin, enough food for 6. Stuffed with whole food.

A long, dark walk in the night. I am amazed at how much more she can see than me. I am blind in the darkness. The electric light has robbed me of my night sight.

Music into the night.

Lay upon the ground,

sleep...

Day 7: Albuquerque, NM - Gila, NM

Sorry about the delay, you know, work...

Woke with the kitties, mostly inflated air mattress.

Broke the fast at a local spot. Free internet. Showed Erica my dream scooter.

On the road south.

Deserts and sand gave way to mountains, big mountains, and scores of trees.

After almost missing every turn, I arrived in Silver City and stopped in at a Cafe.

Free internet.

Found my cousin getting of work at a seed and planters kinda place.

Had lunch with a friend of hers and started to catch up.

Spent most of the day running around, doing errands and drinking more coffee.

Lesley went to a women's sweat lodge in the evening, so I whiled away my time at another cafe.

Free internet.

Blogged the first 6 days of my trip while sipping on an expertly made americano.

Picked Lesley up at the lodge, and met an Austrian who said she liked my country very much.

Headed for Gila, home.

Navigated my fully loaded Honda Civic down a creek bed to a straw bale house where I spent my night.

Spent the night worrying about nothing and everything. The silence.

No electricity, plumbing, people, cars, planes.

Painful.

toss, turn, cats

sleep.

Day 6: Colorado Springs, CO - Albuquerque, NM

Alarm.

Snooze.

Repeat.

And back on the road for warmer climbs.

Got to see the living battle of Trees versus Desert.

The trees lost.

Plains gave way to towering snow capped mountains.

Had a surreal stop for gas in Santa Fe. Did not announce my presence in the town, and made a quick in - quick out maneuver. A little strange all the same, being back to that place.

On to ABQ.

Picked Erica up, skates and all, at the local Derby shop. Onto a quick pint of the black stuff then to Derby practice and scrimmage before the bout on Saturday.

Erica is feared on skates.....nuff said.

Derby in a cavernous Mexicano bar/club is yet another priceless image.

Onto my first bite of New Mexican cuisine in over a year and good conversations with the Derby folk. The food was great. Myself and green chile had been apart for too long.

Back to Erica's place for the Cure, adventures in air-matressing and good conversation about life, the universe and everything.

Cats, cats, and sleep......

Day 5: Colorado Springs

Breakfast adventure with Elaine, Gabe and Mara trying to locate and enjoy Dunkin Donuts.

Doughnuts found, eaten, enjoyed.

Mara left to be on her own adventures back to L.A. (she'll have to fill in that one)

Lot's of time figuring out the next leg of the trip.

Lunch with Chris and Elaine.

Hang out time with Elaine and Gabe back at the Baca house.

Picked up Chris from work.

Back to the Baca house for good times with pasta, wine, mutually inflicted pain, wine, American Idol, wine, and a last hold of Gabriel.

Hotel, time to reflect on the amazing people I just had the pleasure to spend time with, and willing myself to continue with my journey.

Toss.....Turn......Sleep.......

Day 4: Colorado Springs, CO

Breakfast/Lunch at Chipotle, complete with people watching.

Then over to the Baca House for some hang-out time with Elaine and Gabe.

Dinner with Chris and Mara at the local Hooters, included a tasty beer and hot dog.

Some more hang-out time.

Hotel, pillow talk, cookies, sleep.........

Day 3: Colorado Springs, CO

Awoke feeling great.......or was it.........no.........i'll remember it as feeling great.

Quick stop of the Baca house and then onto a local baseball game! A hat was bought, both to show pride and to hold off the radiation. 25 cent hot dogs, sunflower seeds, and some kind of mystical ice cream that came in many flavors, none of them actually tasting like ice-cream.

Our team won! Yes, I had to be told that. I was really trying to follow along.

Back to the Baca house for some family BBQ and video games......in which I got my ass handed to me.

Early back to the Hotel for Chris' first day of work.

Better pillow talk and cookies with Mara.

Sleep.....

Day 2: Rifle, CO - Colorado Springs, CO

Awoke and left my small house in Rifle behind me.

Drove through and over the rockies. Got out and touched the snow at the summit. 2 older folks laughed at me for getting out of my car at almost 11,000 ft with just a t-shirt. twas cold.

Made it to Colorado Springs, to the current house of the Baca's. Met my nephew.....

wow.

My world view was shifted perceptibly at that moment.

Held my nephew....

A little more of a shift.

Then crying and a diaper.

A lot more of a shift.

Met up with Mara, and adventures in rocking chairs as I introduced my fiends to the Cracker Barrel. Rocking chairs, thick food, and the "I'tiss".

Adventures in drinking and a sampler platter the size and weight of a small car at a local eatery.

Then Chris and I were onto a Bar/Jazz club for more drinks and an amazing first cigar experience. The band rocked, a CD was bought, more drinking, and mama Mara came and took us home.

An attempt at night conversation, then quick and complete sleep.......

A moment of reflection...

after a week of travel.

No pictures uploaded yet, but i'll sum up thus far:

Day 1: Newbury Park, CA - Rifle, CO

Tried stopping for gas in Las Vegas, after telling myself specifically not to stop, for any reason, in Las Vegas. Worked out about as well as I had thought and was unable to get gas. To be fair, I stopped in way North Las Vegas, on the wrong side of the tracks as it were, and the only gas stations that I could find were cash only pay inside jobs. Not to friendly to receipt requests and california license plates.
Stopped for gas in a town just North of Vegas, which was populated by about 25-30 motorcycles and choppers (there is a difference) which turned to be manned by 25-30 very sunburned but ridiculously happy french men. Apparently it is a big deal to rent/but a bike and cruise route 66, and feel what it is to be a rough and tumble american. Basically priceless, but no videos were taken.
Stopped in Grand Junction to get a place to crash for the night. Instead found 3 booked up hotels, a county fair in the parking lot of the town mall, one angry and misunderstood 30 something, mustached, makeup wearing, country queen. Again, priceless.

Stopped in Parachute to get a place to crash for the night. 2 more booked up motels.

Stopped in Rifle to get a place to crash for the night. Got a room. Went to the room. Hair in the bathtub, towels on the ground, bed unmade, family size dorritos bag on the ground, and bud light cans overflowing out of the trash can.

Back to the desk and onto room #2. Door opens, dark room, both beds populated with sleeping folks. Like a ninja, was able to leave undetected.

Back to the desk. "the girl that worked this afternoon really screwed stuff up". Onto room #3. A family condo with 3 beds and an upstairs area with kitchen. Enormous King bed all for me. Cartoons, and sleep........

game over

Game F'ing Over!

Spiders Found Inside Boy's Ear!

Crazy time...

Going through worldly belongs and weighing, "am I going to need/want this in the next 4 months???". Which is sorta silly, because if not, why do I even have the damn thing?

Arg, possessions suck.

How did I get this many books? When did that happen? And why can't I figure out which one's I will "need" in the nest 4 months.

What I really need is one'o them Marry Poppins Bags. I just carry around everything I will ever need in one little bag and take stuff out whenever I need it.

I posted some of my Holga photos on Flickr. I'm still trying to figure out the Camera and what it's limitations are, so any comments on the shots would be greatly appreciated.

and back to sorting.....

My Last Week...

in California, at least for a few months. It's always strange to stay in a place just long enough to start having a life; i.e. building friendships, establishing routines, and such, then having to leave it to start over again. I am very excited to start the new season at Santa Fe Opera, this year as a member of the staff. I'm just really going to miss all the relationships that have been rekindled over the past few months. It's crazy to think that I could have been somewhere on a cruise ship working away until june, having missed all the experiences of the last few months that I have come to really cherish.

Here's to breaking a leg, what has turned out to be the ultimate expression of routine breaking!
I wouldn't recommend it to everyone, seeing how it's very expensive and painful, but if you are as hard headed as I am, it's not a bad option.

I'm also unspeakably excited to go up to Colorado to visit 2 great friends who have just had a child. I was expecting myself to be less able to really get my head around a person i've known since high-school having a child, but it really feels right, on many levels. So seeing them will be great, then off to adventures in the New Mexican desert.

I predict: great food, good friends, professional freak-outs, emotional turmoil, margaritas, heat, rain, inspiring sunsets, great people, awful people, no-time, far too much time, earth, air, and light, light, light.

The Richmond Wrecking Belles

IMG_9261.JPG, originally uploaded by Miclrk.

kicked serious booty on Saturday night. Cheers to the whole team!
Images of the event are on flickr (www.flickr.com/photos/curbsideprophet/) and videos of the event are on youtube (youtube.com/miclrk). So check them out.

The persistence paid off in the San Francisco as I was able to meet up with the lighting director of the opera there and have a little chit chat. There is really nothing better when going into an "interview" than the person doing the interviewing just generally wanting to have a talk, about whatever. I guess I feel that a conversation is far more efficient means of getting to know someone than the scripted questions, and "probing" that really just show how adept the interviewee is a spontaneously bringing B.S. into existence. So the "convo" went well, and I got a tour of the Opera thrown in to boot. I can finally check "Limp around a major opera house" off my list of things to do.

Next I head out to North Carolina for the weekend. The time comes soon, when all that I own will be collected in one place, at one time. I can not be sure what the outcome will be. Only time will tell...

In a Cafe....

In San Francisco, sipping on an expertly made soy latte (they use vanilla soy and have the patience to create good foam with soy, not easy, but doesn't take a whole lot of extra effort either). I really like this city a lot, I like the way it feels to be here, I like the way the light bounces off of everything in the east bay and daily city, it makes downtown glow from every dirrection. It's what LA could look like, if there wasn't that death cloud hanging above us at all times. Although I have to say that LA wins out for the late afternoon light, that time at like 3-5 pm when the sun shifts from the harsh yellow of mid afternoon to that heavy, saturate amber/gold. And that plus the smogy smog.....brilliant.

I do like this city, i like my friends more though. I guess when it comes down to it, thats what a place, a home, really means. You just have to find that place where, without any exersion of effort, you find yourself surrounded by people and places you love. And you really luck out when what you do to make money falls in line with everything else you love about a place. The ideal situation.

Here's to ideals.

Why Must I Cry!

Just in case you missed it.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=8mWW6kRITEY

Youtube really is an outlet for the best and brightest the free has to offer.

Derby

In celebration of my upcoming trip to see Tiana in San Fracisco as she kicks ass as Demanda Riot, I have composed a Hiku to express my feelings of the Derby world.

::the lights in the theater lower. a single point of light, harsh and white in it's intensity reveals to us a single stool, three legs, center stage. the seat is covered in what could be described as red velvet, though not nearly as expesive. the artist uproaches from off stage left, and moves to the seat. he sits. a cold quiet desends across the audience. two singular coughs can be heard, barly audible. the artist lifts his head. speaks::

Oh Derby, sweet pain
You claimed my left leg this year
Next year, maybe more?

::rapture embraces the audience as the imencity of those words takes refuge in their souls. sobbing can be heard. as if to release the audience from the lucid grasp of such poetry the lights once again dims and darkness reigns in the space::

And yes, that is indeed what 6 years of college can do to you.

So Derby this weekend, and maybe a job interview???
If I can get the guy at San Francisco Opera to call me back, I may be able to meet up with him while I'm up there, which would rock.

more to come.
